Description
A Chicago Icon...The Chicago Tribune.
The Tribune was founded by James Kelly, John E. Wheeler and Joseph K. C. Forrest, publishing its first edition on June 10, 1847. The home of the Chicago Tribune and Tribune Company is the Tribune Tower, a neo-Gothic building by New York architects John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood.
Although Howells' and Hood's design won, many perceived as the best design a radically simplified tower by the Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen which took second place. Saarinen's tower design, which anticipated the coming impact of stripped-down modernism on building form, was preferred by critics like Louis Sullivan, and was a strong influence on the next generation of skyscrapers.
